Nelson Arns Neumann holds a medical degree from the Federal University of Paraná (1988), a master’s degree in Epidemiology from the Federal University of Pelotas (1997), and a PhD in Public Health from the University of São Paulo (2000).
He served as a lay missionary doctor in the Diocese of Bacabal, Maranhão, in 1988 and 1989. From 1990 to 2025, he led the National Coordination of the Pastoral da Criança – the social action arm of the CNBB (National Conference of Bishops of Brazil) – where he played a key role in the field of Health Services. Since 2010, he has been a member of the Board of Directors of Pastoral da Criança International.
He also serves on the Commission for the Integration of Border Physicians at the Federal Council of Medicine and is a Commissioner at Georgetown University – The Lancet Commission on Faith, Trust, and Global Health.
He has extensive experience in Public Health, with an emphasis on Epidemiology, working primarily in Primary Health Care, Child Health, Prevention, and Intervention. The son of Dr. Zilda Arns Neumann, he is married to Luciane Friedrich Neumann and is the father of three daughters – Nicole, Nátali, and Bárbara.
